About Munagaku pappu recipe – Munagaku pappu is a dal variety made using toor dal and moringa leaves. This dish is very easy to prepare and healthy. This dish goes well with rice, ragi ball and chapati. Moringa leaves are nothing but drumstick leaves, it is known as munagaku in telugu, murunga keerai in tamil and saguna in hindi.

Moringa leaves are considered as a super food because of its health benefits. Many south indian villages have these drumstick trees planted near their houses or in the farms. Every part of the drumstick tree offers great health benefits as they are full of essential nutrients and antioxidants. Drumsticks are used to make curries, sambar, fry etc. and the leaves are used to make dal, fry, powder.

In western countries, moringa powder is extracted from the leaves that are dried and ground.

Munagaku pappu recipe – Procedure

1. In a pressure cooker add toor dal and rinse it. Add few green chillis, tomato, garlic, tamarind and turmeric powder. Pressure cook this for 5 whistles.

2. Let the pressure release naturally. Dal will be cooked nice and mushy.

3. Wash and rinse moringa leaves and add this into the cooked dal and cook it well. It takes 5 to 6 minutes to cook.

4. Once the leaves are cooked moringa leaves dal is ready.

5. For tempering, heat some oil in a pan add some mustard seeds and curry leaves.

6. Transfer this tempering into the dal and mix it well.

7. Munagaku pappu or moringa leaves dal is ready.

Notes

  1. You can pressure cook the leaves along with the dal, but i always prefer to cook afterwards. Because moringa leaves takes very little time to cook, it does not require to pressure cook for many whistles.

Ingredients

250 ml cup measure

  • ½ cup toor dal
  • ¾ cup moringa leaves munagaku
  • 1 tomato medium sized
  • 4 to 5 nos. green chillis
  • 2 pods garlic
  • tamarind -small lemon size
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • few curry leaves
