Dondakaya karam goes well with rice, roti and also perfect for side dish. It is easy and simple to prepare, and also goes well for a lunch box.
The spice mix which we prepare adds nice flavor to this dish. I use coconut to prepare the karam, and it enhances the taste of this dish.
Ivy gourd ha lot of health benefits, adding this veggie into our daily diet will be good. Do try this recipe and let me know how it turned out.
Dondakaya karam – cooking procedure
First we have to prepare a spice powder. For that, dry roast chana dal, urad dal and cumin seeds and keep it aside. Dry roast coconut for 3 minutes and keep aside.
Grind everything, add red chilli powder and garlic and grind it into coarse powder. Keep aside.
Heat some oil in pan, add groundnuts and fry them until crunchy. It takes 3 to 4 minutes. Keep them aside.
In the same pan, Add mustard, chana dal and urad dal, let it fry for 2 minutes.
Add curry leaves, and ivy gourd. Mix well and fry it for 2 minutes.
Add salt, turmeric powder mix well and fry them for 15 minutes until the vegetable is cooked well.
Now, add the karam and mix well. Add fried groundnuts and mix well.
Dondakaya karam is ready. Serve hot and enjoy.
Notes
- Cut the vegetable into thin slices, so it can be cooked easily.
- You can also add dried coconut instead of fresh one.
- Use tender ivy gourd for this recipe.
- You can skip adding groundnuts, we include to add some crunch.

Ingredients
- 200 grams Ivy gourd
- ¼ cup Ground nuts
- 1 tsp chana dal
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- curry leaves
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- salt to taste
To roast and grind
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
