Ridge gourd is popularly known as beerakaya in telugu, peerkangai in tamil, turai in hindi. It is ridged, dark green vegetable with white pulp inside. Using ridge gourd we can make chutney, curry, fry etc. Ridge gourd has amazing health benefits and it is a great source of medicinal properties. It is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and calories and helps in weight loss.

About Beerakaya curry Recipe

Beerakaya curry is very simple and yet tasty recipe. I usually use toor dal while making this recipe. Adding toor dal increases the taste of this dish. You can use any dal of your wish like chana dal and moong dal. It can be served with rice, chapati and puri.

Beerakaya curry Recipe – process

  1. Take a pressure cooker and add toor dal and ridge gourd pieces. To this add red chilli powder, coriander seed powder and rock salt. Add little oil and mix it well.

2. Add enough water and pressure cook it for 3 whistles and let the pressure leave naturally. Check if the ridge gourd is cooked well.

3. Now take a pan, add some oil. Once the oil is heated add mustard seeds, curry leaves and onion, sauté for a minute. Now add tomatoes, turmeric powder and cook until it cooks well.

4. Add the cooked dal and ridge gourd to it and cook it for 5 minutes till the curry thickens.

5. Serve hot with rice and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 250 grams Ridge gourd
  • 50 grams Toor dal
  • 2 tbsp Red Chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander seed powder
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • Curry leaves
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tomato
  • salt to taste
  • water as required

Instructions

  • Take a pressure cooker add toor dal and ridge gourd.
  • Add red chilli powder, coriander seed powder and salt to it and mix it well.
  • Add 2 cups of water and pressure cook it for 3 whistles.
  • Let the pressure release naturally, meanwhile cut onion and tomato.
  • Once the pressure releases check if ridge gourd cooked properly.
  • Take a pan add some oil, once oil is heated add mustard seeds, curry leaves and onion. Sauté it well.
  • Add chopped tomato, turmeric powder to it and cook until it's mushy.
  • Now add cooked dal and ridge gourd to it and cook it for 5 minutes.
  • At the end add coriander leaves and serve hot.

Notes

  1. Make sure the ridge gourd is tender and soft.
  2. You can cook the vegetable in a pot or pressure cooker, i pressure cooked it.
  3. Don’t add more water while pressure cooking the vegetable.
