It has lot of vegetables, which increases the taste and nutrition of the dish. You can use store bought millet rava or you can also make this at home easily.
I feel millet rava upma tastes better than the normal upma we prepare using store brought rava or semolina. Millet rava is healthier option than the normal rava. Replace normal rava with millet rava and try this upma recipe. You can make this upma and enjoy for breakfast or even lunch.
Millets have been gaining lot of popularity all over the world. They are gluten-free and has high protein, fiber and antioxidants. We can find millets and millet products in many stores easily. We can make lot of recipes like pongal, pulao, khichdi etc.
Millet rava upma – cooking procedure
Firstly, chop all the vegetables required for the recipe. I have used carrot, peas and beans. Also measure some rava and keep ready.
Heat some oil, and add few peanuts, chana dal, urad dal and fry. Add some mustard and let it splutter. Also add few slit green chilli’s and curry leaves and fry for 2 minutes.
Add chopped onion and fry until translucent. Then, goes in finely chopped ginger. Fry it for 2 minutes.
Now, add in all the vegetables and give it a quick mix and fry for 2 minutes. Add in required salt and mix well. Close the lid and cook the veggies until they are half cooked.
Once veggies are half done, then add required water and let it come to boil.
Then, add the millet rava and mix it very well.
In a medium flame, cook it until it absorbs all the water. It takes around 5 to 6 minutes.
At last, add few coriander leaves and ghee, and give it a nice mix. Close the lid and let it rest for few minutes.
Millet rava upma is ready. Enjoy it hot with favorite chutney.
Notes
- Millet rava and water ratio is 1:3. For 1 cup Millet rava you need 3 cups of water.
- I used kodo millet rava, you can use any millet rava available.
- Always try to include few veggies for this upma, because only millet could be heavy for the tummy.
- I always love to have peanuts in upma, you can happily exclude it.
- Adding ghee enhances the taste and the texture of the upma.
Serving suggestion
- You can make this upma for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Since we have added lot of veggies, it will be super light and yet filling.
- This millet upma can be paired with sambar, chutney, or just with little pickle by the side.
- I recommend to serve this upma hot, because it tastes best when we have it as soon as possible.

Ingredients
- ½ cup Millet rava

- 1½ cups water
- salt to taste
